The Fulfillment of Springtime

8 MINUTE READ

This is an auspicious time of year, and we should take advantage of all that is offered as spring has now officially returned. This year, in the northern hemisphere, March 20th marks the renewal of spring (September in the southern hemisphere), also known as the vernal equinox. In the Celtic traditions this date was celebrated with rituals and revelry meant to bring blessings to our new beginnings. This was the celebration of Ostara.

Many of the Celtic holidays were greatly influenced by the cycles and harvesting of crops and were in essence agricultural in nature, but this particular holiday was originally Germanic in origin and was adopted by the Celts later on. Thus, although there are many pagan holidays that were celebrated by the Celts, Ostara is considered one of the more modern of their sacred days.

Do not miss out on celebrating Ostara and enjoying nature’s spring. There are many ways to honor the spring equinox including planting seeds, taking a nature walk to seek out the first signs of spring (similar to an easter egg hunt in some ways and a fun game for children if you can get creative), decluttering your home, and even journaling about spiritual growth or the renewal of ideas and your innovative goals. Ostara is all about enlightenment, rebirth, and abundance.

A thread exists between our own cycles in life and the happenings in the transition of seasons in the natural world. Ostara in reality represents a precise moment of time on the day of the spring equinox. This is the time when a balance comes to exist between shadow and light. A time when, for the most part, there is an equal amount of both light and dark in the day.

The days to follow will then begin to become more and more overtaken by the light moving forward. This could encourage us to recognize the need for more balance in areas of our lives or to understand the shadow and the light that exists within us and begin to let go of the darkness. As the light now gains dominion, many animals will wake from hibernation, so perhaps, in a sense, we should do the same.

This is a time for fertility and prosperity and creation. Thus, light a candle or metaphorically create a spark in your life if you will. Embrace that first light of warmth and creation overtaking the cold winter months of contemplation. This is the perfect time for this as we are now entering into the next new moon that happens to be in the cardinal fire sign of Aries on March 21st. This new moon in Aries is less than 24 hours after the spring equinox making the positive energy of this sign that much more potent in regard to this new moon phase.

As Aries is technically the first of all the zodiac signs, follow suit and take charge of your life. Make way for new, risk to discover change, and be determined in your goals. How can we make this a reality for ourselves in order to honor our new spring? What areas of our lives may need rebirth and action? Another important aspect of this is that Aries happens to be at 0 degrees during this lunation. This is important because 0 degrees is considered a critical degree in astrology. Being at 0 degrees, this marks the beginning of a new astrological season or journey.

This illuminates an even greater intensity in regard to the energies of Aries just as springtime illuminates the power of new life and fresh starts. Considering all the bounty that exists in recent days the universe is begging us to NOT waste this opportunity and to be sure to set thoughtful and meaningful intentions towards our goals, ideas, plans, projects, etc., so that we can watch them unfold and bloom in the weeks and months to come.

Every new moon has its own gifts and offerings, so consider adopting a moon journal to write in at each new moon. The new moons are a time to clear your slate. Use these times to determine how the unique aspects of that new moon can help us to begin again clean and unspoiled in different areas of our lives. Revamp what is needed. Then, newness of a kind may start to sprout, grow, and flourish as we reach the upcoming full moon phase.

International Earth Day is also the same day as the vernal equinox and should reinforce an understanding of the importance of the earth and its resources. Speaking of new beginnings maybe recognize a renewed responsibility to care for the planet on which you live. What does that mean to you or for you?

Does it mean cleaning up your neighborhood or community? Does it mean fighting pollution? Does it mean donating to groups or organizations that work towards improving the quality of and sustaining our natural resources? Does it mean a commitment to more disciplined recycling? Does it mean planting a tree? Does it mean informing others of this special day and asking them what they might think to do to honor our earth? We are all accountable for informing one another. The human voice is a powerful thing.

The potential continues on in that this week is also National Agriculture Week and it is ripe with many possibilities and opportunities. It is a time to show gratitude for the agricultural workers including farmers, ranchers, etc., as their contributions to our health and well-being are invaluable. A time to be thankful for the plants and crops that SPRING from the earth and provide us with the majority of our food sources. Agriculture is synonymous with prosperity and is responsible not only for what we eat and for most of our fabrics, but also for its impacts in regard to strengthening our rural economies.

Perhaps discover ways to support your local farms, ranches, fisheries, forests, etc. Be mindful of the food you eat and clothes you wear, as well as the care and effort put in to making them both safe and readily available. Perhaps this is even a time to better recognize those who do not reap the security and benefits of what our agricultural services can provide due to their own life circumstances. Take action for those people in creatively positive and impactful ways should you have the means or passion to do so.

Organize your abundance of thoughts in a helpful and productive manner by embracing some or all of the questions or challenges posed throughout this article so as to bring them that much closer to becoming a reality.

Considering all that marks the beginning of this new spring season it would seem that we have so much more to look forward to before it comes to a close. Thus, since March 21st also happens to be World Poetry Day, as an ode to spring, I decided to create a poem to inspire as we begin to experience all that this new season has to bring.

All The Springs A Stage

Spring breaks upon us as waves

break upon the rocky shore. The

stage tells stories of creativity and

transformation born. Footprints

brand the blades of grass, making

way to the scene of a fresh morn.

Changes await witness in the wild

 new, opened, and genuine; unclad

and utterly torn. No longer quiet and

buried within, the winter we are now

left to mourn. Colors, sounds, smells

and textures do befall. Take the lead,

act, and show your destiny adorned.

Enter upstage, part in shadow, not clearly

seen. A voice on a breeze, a whisper that

does forewarn. Potential expands with

grace and hope, as wings of a bird flying

under lights of a new dawn. Patience and

progress, the journeymen of new act and

verse, warily guide to center stage, it is

there the child within is born. She asks to

be heard with a voice that does prevail, to

be seen as her flower petals open risking

scorn, to be known and accepted even for

her thorns. Conquered trials and doubt

give way to flourish. Bloom from stage left

to stage right with fear now gone. Like the

crescendo of a symphony ride the spring tide.

Then, suddenly wake and find yourself down-

stage. All eyes on you, do not fall away. Be as

spring and own the stage. Emote with vibrancy,

dance and sing. Shatter the walls of solitude and

cold. Let the world see you, for you are glorious

and bold. The rainbow of you, a gift

the spring foretold.

Ways that you might reinforce the persuasive vitality currently being gifted by the universe:

1)   Journaling never goes out of style, and it is that outfit that is always suitable for any occasion. Use it in your own unique way.

2)   Tarot reading can be like an adventure even if you have never done it (get a deck and give it a try, it is easy to go on to amazon and search a couple things you like with the words tarot deck attached to the search to find a deck that resonates with you, ex: search herbs and plants tarot deck, or nature and wildlife tarot deck, etc.)

3)   Vision boarding (so many of us are visual thinkers, do not overlook the importance of nurturing what is innate to you)

4) Grounding (spring is the season that is most closely connected to the earth element). Walking bare foot outside, as well as digging your hands into the newly awoken earth are beautiful experiences but there is so much more to understand about the essence of grounding.

5) Creating via writing, art, dance, music, etc. What inspires you to feel the vibrancy and colors of springtime?

6) Whatever other ways might resonate with you. Afterall, your own ideas are always best to consider first.
